History of the Creation of Phra Somdej Nam Oi

Origins and Purpose

The Phra Somdej Nam Oi amulet was created under the guidance of Than Chao Khun Utsarsophon. The name "Nam Oi" (Molasses Somdej) is believed to have originated from two possible reasons:

  1. The color of the amulet closely resembles molasses.
  2. There was a mixture of sugarcane juice in the sacred materials used in its creation.

The shape of this Buddha image is similar to the Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang, with a distinctive design that sets it apart.

Production and Consecration Ceremonies

This amulet was produced in two batches:

  • First Batch (BE 2513 / 1970):

    • A total of 10,000 pieces were made.
    • Consecrated by Than Khun Nor on December 5, 1970, at the Ubosot of Wat Thepsirin.
  • Second Batch (BE 2514 / 1971):

    • After Than Khun Nor passed away, an additional 20,000 pieces were created.
    • These amulets were brought to Luang Pu Toh, Wat Pradoochimplee, for further consecration.
    • The later models featured a "V" shape on the Buddha’s body, which is less favored among collectors.
