Luang Phor Poon (Lp Poon) Wat Pailom

Luang Phor Poon, also known as Phra Kru Wisutthithammasan, was born in 1912 in Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand. His birth name was Poon Ngamsin. From a young age, he demonstrated a deep interest in Buddhism, often spending time at his local temple, learning about Buddhist teachings and participating in temple activities. This interest led him to pursue monastic life, which would later make him one of the most respected monks in Thailand.

Early Life and Ordination

At the age of 15, Poon became a novice monk at a local temple, showing an early dedication to the Buddhist path. His official ordination as a fully ordained monk took place when he turned 20, in accordance with Thai Buddhist tradition. He was given the monastic name “Wisutthithammasan.” His formal education in Buddhist doctrine began immediately, and he showed particular aptitude in sacred sciences and meditation practices.

Becoming Abbot of Wat Pailom

In 1943, at the age of 31, Luang Phor Poon was appointed abbot of Wat Pailom in Nakhon Pathom Province. Wat Pailom was a temple that had been without leadership for some time and was in need of repair and revitalization. Under Luang Phor Poon’s leadership, Wat Pailom experienced significant growth and development. He oversaw the construction of an Ubosot (ordination hall), completed in 1950, which became the centerpiece for many temple ceremonies and a center of spiritual learning for the community.

Throughout his tenure as abbot, Luang Phor Poon initiated multiple projects to enhance the temple’s infrastructure and spiritual environment. He encouraged the community to support the temple, thereby creating a lasting connection between Wat Pailom and its surrounding villagers. His dedication to the temple and its community endeared him to both locals and followers from across Thailand.

Spiritual Practices and Expertise in Amulet Creation

Luang Phor Poon was known for his profound understanding of Buddhist teachings and his disciplined meditation practice. However, he became most famous for his expertise in creating amulets, which are highly revered in Thai Buddhism. His amulets, especially the Phra Khun Paen and Kuman Thong amulets, are among the most sought-after for their reputed protective and prosperous qualities.

The process of creating amulets involved gathering sacred materials, such as holy powders, herbs, and metals, which he would blend and shape into intricate designs. His Khun Paen amulets, often featuring the image of the warrior Khun Paen, symbolize protection and power. The Kuman Thong amulets, representing protective child spirits, are believed to bring fortune and safeguard the bearer.

These amulets were consecrated through intensive chanting and meditation rituals, which Luang Phor Poon personally led. Followers believe that his amulets offer powerful blessings, as they are said to bring prosperity, protection, and good fortune. His amulets remain popular among collectors and devotees who value their spiritual efficacy.

Dedication to the Community and Spiritual Guidance

Luang Phor Poon continued his work at Wat Pailom until his passing on May 22, 2005, at the age of 93, after spending 68 years in monkhood. Remarkably, his body has remained undecomposed, a phenomenon considered by many to be a sign of his spiritual power. His body is preserved in a glass coffin at Wat Pailom, where devotees continue to pay their respects.

The legacy of Luang Phor Poon endures through the amulets he created and the teachings he imparted to his community. Wat Pailom remains a center of pilgrimage, with followers visiting to honor his memory, view his preserved body, and seek blessings.
