The revered Phra Sum Thao Wan Nur Din Phasom Bailan BE2325 is one of the earliest known and most sacred amulets attributed to Luang Pu Thep Lok Udon of Wat Chana Songkhram. Crafted using sacred clay and burnt palm leaf scriptures (Bailan), this amulet reflects royal-era artistry and carries a legacy of protective spiritual power that has endured for nearly 240 years.

Origin and Discovery

This amulet was rediscovered in 1953 following an incident in which a young temple boy noticed signs of illegal excavation at a small chedi within the temple grounds. Upon investigation, the monastic community, along with the temple committee and assistance from Chanasongkhram Police Station, decided to carry out a formal excavation of both the small and large chedis. The excavation revealed a significant cache of ancient amulets, Buddha images, relics, and sacred items.

The Fine Arts Department confirmed that the amulets were created during the reign of King Rama I and were originally enshrined by Prince Maha Sura Singhanat following the triumphant victory in the Nine Armies War. These amulets were intended to preserve and uphold Buddhism during a pivotal era of the Rattanakosin Kingdom.

Characteristics and Craftsmanship

Phra Sum Thao Wan was crafted from a sacred mixture of raw temple clay and palm-leaf scripture ash, in accordance with traditional formulas used by forest monks and royal artisans. The amulets possess exquisite Buddha features that reflect Ayutthaya-style craftsmanship, with soft, flowing natural lines and thin borders typical of genuine, centuries-old votive tablets. Unlike newer imitations, their edges are not machine-cut or overly defined.

The sacred properties of the amulet are said to provide universal protection, prosperity, and clarity of mind. Today, these amulets are highly prized by collectors and meditation practitioners alike for their authenticity, origin, and enduring spiritual effectiveness.

Historical Background of Wat Chana Songkhram

Wat Chana Songkhram, formerly known as Wat Klang Na, is an ancient temple that underwent significant restoration under the command of King Rama I. Renamed “Wat Tong Pu” to honor a Mon-style temple from Ayutthaya, it became a residence for the Mon monastic community. The temple was elevated to royal status following Prince Maha Sura Singhanat’s victorious return from battle. He enshrined his sacred yantra robe within the temple, further enhancing its spiritual significance.

Consecration and Blessing Ceremony

A final consecration ceremony was held over three months, drawing 108 esteemed monks from across Thailand. This extended ritual, steeped in Vipassana and Kasina practices, ensured each amulet was empowered with spiritual energy of the highest order. Textures may vary, and some amulets display red, black, or pink markings. Over time, they develop a distinctive sheen through natural aging or gentle rubbing.

Current Status and Caution

Today, the Phra Sum Thao Wan amulet is featured in nearly every major amulet competition. Its historical clarity, artistic excellence, and spiritual power make it one of the most valuable youth amulets in Thai amulet circles. Due to its rising fame, imitations are common. Authentic pieces will always exhibit naturally aged features and hand-molded flow, in contrast to machine-perfect counterfeits.
