Phra Somdej Sum Rakang

Created in B.E. 2495 (1952)

By Luang Pu Nak, Wat Rakang Kositaram

πŸ§˜β€β™‚οΈ Creator

  • Monk: Luang Pu Nak Punyanako

  • Temple: Wat Rakang Kositaram, Bangkok

  • A revered monk in the lineage of Somdej Toh, known for his deep spiritual discipline and continuation of sacred amulet-making traditions at Wat Rakang.

πŸ—“οΈ Year of Creation

  • B.E. 2495 (1952)

  • Created during the post-war revival of Thai Buddhism, this batch aimed to honor the legacy of Somdej Phra Buddhacarya (Toh Prommarangsi).

πŸ”¨ Purpose of Creation

  • To commemorate and revive the traditional Phra Somdej amulet lineage at Wat Rakang

  • Fundraising for temple restoration projects

  • To offer a sacred object for devotees seeking protection, fortune, and blessings

πŸ§ͺ Materials Used (Nur Phong)

The amulets were made from a rare and highly sacred powder mixture:

  • Broken fragments of old Phra Somdej amulets from Wat Bangkhunprom (recovered from the damaged Chedi during B.E. 2500 restoration)

  • Sacred powder (Phong Itthijay, Phong Maharach, Phong Putthakun) from prior consecrations

  • Incense ash, flower pollen, and temple soil

  • Other mixed herbal and holy ingredients from prominent temples in Bangkok and nearby provinces

The resulting texture is smooth, chalky, and often cream to light gray in color, with visible natural aging.

πŸ›• Consecration Ceremony

Held at Wat Rakang Kositaram, the ceremony was solemn and powerful.

πŸ”Ή Presiding Monk:

  • Luang Pu Nak Punyanako

πŸ”Έ Participating Monks:

  • Senior monks from Wat Bangkhunprom, Wat Bowonniwet, and other city pillar temples

  • Rituals included 3-day chanting, meditation, and traditional Buddha Abhiseka ceremonies to empower the amulets

🧿 Design & Features

  • Style: Classic Somdej design in Sum Rakang posture, reminiscent of Somdej Toh’s original mold

  • Size: Medium to large (Pim Yai and Pim Klang varieties)

  • Back: Some may bear a sacred yantra or temple mark

  • Texture: Dry but smooth surface with aged cracks or natural speckles; authentic pieces often display evidence of sacred ingredients like pollen or incense ash
