Phra Somdej Nam Oi Lang Yant BE2513 Than Chao Khun Nor (CK Nor) Wat Thepsirin

History of the Creation of Phra Somdej Nam Oi

Origins and Purpose

The Phra Somdej Nam Oi amulet was created under the guidance of Than Chao Khun Utsarsophon. The name “Nam Oi” (Molasses Somdej) is believed to have originated from two possible reasons:

  1. The color of the amulet closely resembles molasses.
  2. There was a mixture of sugarcane juice in the sacred materials used in its creation.

The shape of this Buddha image is similar to the Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang, with a distinctive design that sets it apart.

Production and Consecration Ceremonies

This amulet was produced in two batches:

  • First Batch (BE 2513 / 1970):

    • A total of 10,000 pieces were made.
    • Consecrated by Than Khun Nor on December 5, 1970, at the Ubosot of Wat Thepsirin.
  • Second Batch (BE 2514 / 1971):

    • After Than Khun Nor passed away, an additional 20,000 pieces were created.
    • These amulets were brought to Luang Pu Toh, Wat Pradoochimplee, for further consecration.
    • The later models featured a “V” shape on the Buddha’s body, which is less favored among collectors.

Features and Characteristics

Front Side:
  • The Buddha image is in a meditation posture (Dhyana Mudra).
  • It sits on a three-tiered base within a glass canopy frame.
  • The shape resembles Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang.
  • Two sizes were produced:
    • Large Amulet:
      • 2.3 cm wide at the top
      • 2.5 cm wide at the bottom
      • 3.7 cm high
    • Small Amulet:
      • 1.8 cm wide
      • 2.2 cm high
    • The small prints are rarer and harder to find.
Back Side:
  • The back features a raised Yantra (Sacred Symbol).
  • At the top, beneath the gourd-shaped Yantra, is the letter “U”.
  • Below the “U”, there is a Khmer inscription that reads “Pha Su Dee.”
Material Composition & Appearance:
  • The texture is yellowish-white, resembling sugarcane juice.
  • The surface has a smooth, waxy appearance.
  • The edges are hand-cut, showing a unique two-layered composition, resembling a layered cake.
  • The front has a smooth cut, while the back is rough and porous.
  • Some amulets exhibit clear layering on all four sides, while others reveal it only on one side.

Collector’s Value

  • The earlier models from the first batch (BE 2513) are highly prized, especially those with a clear print and well-preserved condition.
  • The yellowish hue increases its desirability.
  • Prices range from thousands to tens of thousands of baht depending on clarity, condition, and distinct features.

Conclusion

The Phra Somdej Nam Oi is an amulet with significant historical and spiritual value, renowned for its strong blessings and sacred energy. It remains a highly respected and sought-after piece among collectors and devotees.
