Biography of Phra Archan Fan Ajaro

Wat Pa Udom Somporn, Phannanikom District, Sakon Nakhon Province

Phra Ajarn Fan Ajaro of Wat Pa Udom Somporn in Phannanikom District, Sakon Nakhon Province, was one of the respected forest monks of Thailand. He was a devoted disciple of Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatto, the renowned meditation master who played a central role in the Thai Forest Tradition.

Throughout his life, Phra Ajarn Fan dedicated himself to meditation practice, monastic discipline, and the teaching of the Dhamma. His calm conduct and deep understanding of meditation earned him the respect of both monks and lay followers across the country.

One of his teachings reflects the essence of his approach to spiritual practice:

“Every person will one day face a great battle — the battle with death. At that moment, each of us must fight alone. Those who fight well will go to a good destination; those who lose their way will suffer. The only weapon in that battle is mindfulness, and mindfulness can only be cultivated through meditation.”

Early Life

Phra Ajarn Fan Ajaro was born into the Suwannarong family on Sunday, the 14th day of the 9th lunar month, Year of the Pig, corresponding to 20 August BE 2442.

His birthplace was Ban Muang Khai, Phanna Subdistrict, Phannanikom District, Sakon Nakhon Province.

He was the fifth child of Chao Chaiyakumar (Mao) of the Suwannarong family, who were once local rulers of the Phannanikom area. His mother’s name was Nang Nui.

From a young age, Fan was known to be a gentle and disciplined child. He was respectful toward elders and diligent in helping his parents with daily work. Even during difficult tasks, he showed patience and perseverance.

Education

He first attended primary school at Wat Pho Chai School in Ban Muang Khai. Later, he continued his studies under the guidance of his brother-in-law, who served as a deputy district officer in Khon Kaen Province.

At one point, he considered pursuing a career in government service. However, after observing how quickly status and power could change in worldly life, he began to reflect more deeply on the nature of impermanence.

This reflection eventually led him to choose the path of the monastic life.

Novice Ordination

Fan first entered the religious life as a novice monk at Wat Phon Thong in Ban Ba Thong. During this period, he became familiar with temple discipline and basic meditation practice.

His interest in meditation grew steadily, and he began seeking teachers who could guide him further along the spiritual path.

Meeting Luang Pu Mun

In BE 2463, Fan had the opportunity to meet Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatto, one of the greatest meditation masters of the Thai Forest Tradition. Inspired by Luang Pu Mun’s teachings and example, he decided to follow him as a disciple.

Under Luang Pu Mun’s guidance, Fan trained in the Dhammayut monastic tradition, which emphasizes strict monastic discipline and deep meditation practice.

Full Ordination

Fan later received full monastic ordination on 21 May BE 2468 at Wat Pho Somphorn in Udon Thani Province. His preceptor was Phra Tham Chedi, an important monk of the Dhammayut lineage.

Earlier, he had also trained at Wat Sithi Bangkhom in Phannanikom District, where Phra Khru Pong served as his preceptor and meditation teacher during his first rains retreat.

After completing the rains retreat, he returned to Wat Phon Thong, where Phra Khru Sakon Samanakit served as abbot and Vipassanā meditation instructor. Under his guidance, Phra Ajarn Fan continued studying meditation and later joined him on pilgrimage journeys dedicated to meditation practice.

Life as a Forest Monk

During his monastic life, Phra Ajarn Fan traveled to many remote places, practicing meditation in forests and quiet environments. This way of life followed the tradition of forest monks (Phra Thudong), who sought solitude in order to deepen their meditation practice.

Wherever he stayed, he also taught the Dhamma to villagers and encouraged people to develop mindfulness and moral conduct.

Over time, his reputation as a meditation teacher grew, and many people came to listen to his teachings. His calm manner and straightforward explanations made his teachings easy to understand.

Among the faithful, Phra Ajarn Fan was often regarded as one of the Ariya Sangha, or noble monks who had progressed far along the path of spiritual practice.

Contribution to Buddhism

Phra Ajarn Fan spent many decades helping strengthen Buddhism in the northeastern region of Thailand. He supported temples, encouraged meditation practice, and guided countless people toward a deeper understanding of the Dhamma.

His efforts benefited not only the monastic community but also the wider society. Because of his dedication and integrity, he became one of the most respected monks in the region.

Passing

Phra Ajarn Fan Ajaro passed away peacefully on 4 January BE 2527.

At the time of his passing, he was 78 years old and had spent 58 years in the monkhood.

Legacy

Even after his passing, the teachings of Phra Ajarn Fan continue to inspire many people. His life serves as an example of devotion to meditation, discipline, and compassion.

Within the Thai Forest Tradition, he is remembered as one of the important disciples of Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatto, and as a teacher who helped preserve the meditation lineage for future generations.

For many devotees, the memory of Phra Ajarn Fan Ajaro remains a reminder that true spiritual strength comes not from external power, but from mindfulness, discipline, and inner understanding of the Dhamma.
