Biography of Luang Phor Po Chanthasaro
Wat Wang Daeng Nuea, Tha Ruea District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province
Luang Phor Po Chanthasaro of Wat Wang Daeng Nuea, located in Tha Ruea District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, was a highly respected monk known for his knowledge of sacred Buddhist practices and traditional spiritual sciences. In the past, he was regarded as one of the capable monks of the Ayutthaya region, and many local people held deep faith in him.
Luang Phor Po lived during the same era as several well-known monks of Ayutthaya, including Luang Phor Klan of Wat Phra Yati, Luang Phor Chom of Wat Phutthaisawan, and Phra Yan Trilokchai of Wat Phanang Choeng. During that period, many temples in Ayutthaya were centers of learning where monks studied meditation, sacred scriptures, and traditional protective knowledge that had been passed down through generations.
Although Luang Phor Po was once well known within the local region, his name is now rarely mentioned among modern amulet collectors. Over time, the stories surrounding him gradually faded from public attention. Only among certain groups of collectors and local devotees does his name still appear in discussions about old Ayutthaya monks.
When speaking about sacred objects associated with Luang Phor Po, collectors often mention a rare Buddha image known as Ruesi Ump Bat Thue Bua, which depicts a standing ascetic figure holding an alms bowl. This particular type of sacred image is considered extremely rare today and is seldom seen in the amulet market.
Because few examples remain and historical records about the production are limited, the sacred objects connected with Luang Phor Po are not widely circulated. As a result, many newer collectors may not be familiar with his name.
There are also stories about certain powerful amulets connected with his lineage. However, some of these were not directly created by Luang Phor Po himself. Instead, they were made by Luang Phor Jam, a monk under whom Luang Phor Po studied.
As a disciple of Luang Phor Jam, Luang Phor Po was involved in bringing sacred objects to participate in an important consecration ceremony held at Wat Ratchabophit in BE 2481. Ceremonies held at royal temples such as Wat Ratchabophit were significant events where respected monks gathered to perform blessings and recitations.
The amulets associated with this ceremony later became known for their strong reputation among devotees. Many people believed that the spiritual strength of the ceremony was already remarkable because of the presence of Luang Phor Jam, who was highly respected for his knowledge of sacred practices.
There is also a story recorded by Luang Phor Yoi of Wat Amphanwan, who mentioned that Luang Phor Pan of Wat Bang Nom Kho had once spoken about Luang Phor Po. According to the account, Luang Phor Pan described him as:
“Ajarn Po was very skilled in magic, eager to test his knowledge, and always interested in exploring the limits of his abilities.”
This remark suggests that Luang Phor Po was known among his contemporaries as a monk with deep interest in spiritual practices and the study of sacred sciences.
Although historical information about Luang Phor Po Chanthasaro remains limited today, the stories preserved through oral tradition reflect the respect he once received among fellow monks and villagers in Ayutthaya.
His legacy now survives mainly through scattered accounts, rare sacred images, and the memories of those who continue to study the history of early Ayutthaya monks. For collectors and researchers of Thai amulets, Luang Phor Po represents one of the lesser-known monks whose story remains part of the broader spiritual heritage of the region.
